RON & MICHELLE BACKES
Ron has been on the staff of the MN Fellowship of Christian Athletes since 1999. He ministers to coaches, athletes and community leaders in the Metro Area with an emphasis on FCA’s ministry to coaches.
Minnesota FCA’s mission is “Unite, Develop and Mobilize Kingdom Building Leaders in Sport and the Community”. When asked what he does with FCA, Ron responds by saying; “I train coaches how to live and coach Biblically.”
Ron’s responsibilities with FCA may include, but are not limited to, facilitating coaches discipleship studies, serving as the chaplain for the University of MN men’s basketball team, supporting campus ministry leaders, leadership training and one on one discipleship.
He is involved in FCA Camps during the year assuming various leadership roles and promoting camps in his area. Ron also works with people in the community to support the work of FCA on their local campus’s by developing ministry partnerships with FCA and training local leaders to expand God’s Kingdom in their community and beyond.
In addition to his work with FCA, Ron speaks to groups of all ages. He is passionate about sharing his faith story and encouraging people in their walk with God.
His wife, Michelle, serves as the chaplain for the WNBA Minnesota Lynx. She meets regularly with players for Bible study, one on one discipleship and leads home game chapels for the Lynx and visiting team players and coaches.
Ron was born in Cold Spring, Minnesota and attended Cold Spring Rocori High School where he participated in football, basketball and track and field. He went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Marketing Education and later received his Masters Degree from Mankato State University.
In college, Ron competed in the shot put and discus where he won six Big Ten Championships and a NCAA Indoor Shot Put Championship. After graduation he continued to pursue athletics and competed at the world-class level winning the U.S. Indoor Shot Put Championship three times and the U.S. Outdoor Championship once. He went on to represent the United States in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, finishing 10th in the shot put.
Michelle hails from Ladysmith, Wisconsin. She graduated from St. Olaf College where she participated in basketball and softball. She went on to receive her Masters Degree from Mankato State University. She taught and coached for seven years at the high school level before staying home with Carmen and Beau.
