Cultivating a Discipleship Culture

Shelley Person • Apr 15, 2021
“And let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another . . . “ Hebrews 10:24-25a

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

God designed us for Christian community that goes beyond surface relationships, and He calls us into an ever-deepening relationship with Him. But with the busyness of life and the disconnectedness of our culture, it is increasingly difficult to build relationships that sharpen and drive us to become more like Christ. But there is a growing group of high school students who are onto something big.

Four Rochester area FCA huddles have come together to form something new. It started with a heart that was craving more, Leadership Camp, and a timely word from an FCA staff member.

Caleb Tiede grew up in a Christian home, but his relationship with Christ was not always a priority for him. He attended FCA Leadership Camp the summer before his junior year, and God started doing something in his heart. He and other student leaders worked to grow FCA on their campus, but they weren’t seeing a lot of fruit that first semester. They relaunched second semester and twenty people came to the first meeting. They were excited. And then Covid shut everything down, including FCA.

Caleb talked to Brian Koch, FCA Southeast Minnesota Area Representative. Brian suggested they consider bringing all four area huddles together on Fridays. Caleb said, “An idea clicked to create a discipleship group every Friday. I pitched it to the team, and we started brainstorming. GROW – Gather, Ready yourself, Outreach, Worship. That’s how Cultivate started.” The leadership team has created a mission, vision, and values statement along with goals and ministry leader descriptions.

And did we mention? These are high school students.

An Organized Team

The leaders have learned to operate where God has gifted them. In fact, each one took a spiritual gifts assessment and then leaned into those gifts. It has been amazing to watch them grow and operate as a team.

  • Teaching Leader (Caleb) - gives the messages and helps with small group lesson coordination
  • Culture Leader (Trevor) - plans fun games and activities that create a welcoming atmosphere
  • Environment Leader (Kenna) - coordinates food, building, and décor and works closely with Trevor to ensure a welcoming environment
  • Small Group Leader (Anna) - oversees all small groups and with Caleb, coordinates lessons for the leaders
  • Worship Leaders (Grace and Kaitlin)
  • Spiritual Guidance Leader (Aidan) - ensures the group sticks to the mission and vision of Cultivate
  • Discipleship/Mentorship Leader (Nick) - connects attendees with mentors while also building up future leaders.
  • Relational Leader (Julia) - makes sure all leaders and attendees are prioritizing relationship building within small groups.

Leaders Grow

Not only are the attendees growing in their faith, but every member of the leadership team has grown as well. Read what some of them said about their experience:

Kaitlin Swanson - "Through Cultivate, God has shown me His heart for people who gather in His name with a desire to build His kingdom. It has truly changed the way I think about ministry and allowed me to learn from the youth just as much as I am leading them."

Trevor - "Cultivate has helped me grow in numerous ways. Not only as a person but it has helped me grow in my faith. Just seeing how we as an organization can impact high school students gets me fired up and motivated to pursue God."

Nick - "Jesus is the ultimate leader and example for us to follow. Cultivate has provided the opportunity for me to step into a leadership role to be more like Jesus. Being a leader for Cultivate has not only pushed me out of my comfort zone which allowed my faith and leadership skills to grow but allowed me to assist others in their walk with Christ as well."

Kenna - "Being put in a leadership position has pushed me to share the different aspects of my faith, such as my testimony and what I struggle with, more openly."

The mission of Cultivate is “to equip and send out high school Christ followers to boldly share the Gospel, disciple others, and teach them to obey God’s commands (Matthew 28:18-20).” Caleb said, “The heart behind Cultivate is to have an environment where every high school Christ-follower in Rochester can come together, meet other Christians, grow in their relationship with God, and become disciple makers.”

Drawing Hearts to Himself

The group has met less than a dozen times, but God is doing a great work. On a recent Friday night, the speaker had to cancel. Caleb thought it would be horrible, but God had something planned.

“I did the teaching on Living your Faith out Loud . . . Matthew 5:14-16 (light of the world) . . . I asked them what is keeping them from being a light . . . At the end I had them come up, and we did a multiplication visual. One person was all-in and would go get one person at a time [addition]. The second time, one person went out and got one person, then the two went out and got two more. So on one side there were eight people and on the other 30. I talked about multiplication and told them that’s why we started Cultivate. We want to multiply 40 students into 1,000.” Later that night, 40 teens committed to being a light to their community.

Why are you Excited?

Read what some of the leadership team members are most excited about:

  • Aidan - "The thing that I am most excited about is to see how God changes the culture of Rochester high schools. If every single high school Christian lived on fire for God, the difference would be astronomical. I believe that Cultivate is a good first step in that direction."
  • Grace - "I would say I’m most excited to see the individual growth in the Cultivate leaders and students. I believe the biggest impact for the kingdom is made in the hearts and minds of God's people. So having a space to form intentional God glorifying relationships is really exciting! I can’t wait to see what else God has in store for this group of students."
  • Julia - "My favorite part of Cultivate is the passion of the team of leaders. Everyone has the same goal of obeying the Great Commission in mind, and it is evident in the way everyone gives of their time, energy, and talents. It has been so encouraging to me to see how the Spirit works when we open our hands in obedience to the Lord!"
  • Anna - "I’m so excited to be a part of a group whose sole focus is discipling Christians to spread the Word of God."

The Role of FCA in Cultivate

FCA has been the vehicle to provide accountability to the student leadership team and has supplied Bibles to those who come. All Cultivate leaders are current FCA student leaders as well. According to FCA Southeast Minnesota Area Director, James Bolin, “Cultivate is really the small group discipleship arm of the FCA campus ministry in Rochester. That is the heart behind Caleb and the others starting up Cultivate is really just the opportunity to go deeper in relationship.”

And they don’t want to stop at just athletes involved in FCA. Caleb says, “We hope to connect ALL student ministries in Rochester together so we can eradicate Biblical laziness and activate a discipleship movement that will revive Rochester and its surrounding cities.”

Pray for these high school students who are learning how to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, and pray for the multiplication of many more in that area.
