Huddle Leaders Serving

Shelley Pearson • Sep 21, 2022

Forty-seven huddle leaders served 380 campers at the 2022 FCA Northland Sports Camp.

During camp, huddles were seen walking to meals, eating those meals, going to skills training, pausing for huddle time, attending the evening session, and even hanging out during free time – TOGETHER. In the same way Jesus did life with His disciples day in and day out, huddle leaders modeled Christlikeness throughout their days at sports camp. The impact these young adults made is both undeniable and immeasurable.

Collectively, they gave a week of their lives to camp. Individually, they have different stories for why they wanted to serve and how God moved in and through them during those four days. Read through this Q&A with the huddle leaders to get a small glimpse of these stories.

Why did you want to be a huddle leader at sports camp?

Last year was my first year as a huddle leader at Sports Camp and I had a really awesome experience and grew a ton as a leader and in my faith, so I had to come back this year! I like this camp because it combines four of my favorite things - Jesus, friends, sports, and working with kids. I love that FCA recognizes sport as a platform for ministry and allows college students and young adults like me to be a part of their ministry. - Renee

I became a CHRIST- follower after attending this camp eight years ago, so the impact of FCA on my LIFE is eternal and close to my heart. - Alexis

When I was a camper, FCA changed my life. My huddle leader simply loved me, listened to me, and encouraged me. That’s all she did, and they seem like small acts of service— but that whole time she was pouring the Gospel into me. She was pouring Jesus into me. And the other campers were pouring into me, and every other leader and chaperone and staff member poured into me. At the time, I knew everyone had helped open my heart to His glory, but what I didn’t realize was that everything from that camp stuck with me— even weeks and months and years after camp. - Lizzy

I wanted to be a part of seeing Gods love shared with teens. - Tay

This camp is where I rededicated my life to the Lord at age 15, and I was impacted by my huddle leader at the time. I love serving here, being a part of the girls basketball group, and shining a light for the Lord to them! - Olivia

What was a personal highlight for you?

It was getting to know all of the campers and learning their stories. - Jordan

I loved getting to co-lead with another huddle leader and see how much God spoke through her words and actions to touch the high schoolers’ lives and faith in Jesus Christ. - Alexis

I think it would have to be anytime the girls would get really excited! - Cynthia

My personal highlight has been to see the connections formed. Whether that be between other huddle leaders, huddle leaders and campers, campers and coaches, coaches and huddle leaders . . . the community within camp is amazing. You create relationships that last, and these people help you grow in so many ways. - Lizzy

I had an incredible experience overall, but the soccer coaches and kids at practice was my highlight. I loved the way we worked together to incorporate faith in Jesus into the practices while glorifying the Lord through athletics. I also loved chapel time, the speaker, and worship! - Cassie

It was one of my campers accepting Christ! - Tay

What is your favorite impact story from camp?

My favorite story from the huddle was when I shared my testimony with the girls. They opened up so much after I shared my journey with Christ and how investing in him more than myself changed my quality of life. I could see in their hearts that they realized it’s okay to want to follow Jesus. They were all so excited to share their testimonies after I shared mine. - Adrianna

Two of the girls in my huddle said yes to Jesus for the first time this week! It was really cool to watch their understanding deepen as the week went on and they became more comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, feelings, and questions. This was also a highlight ministry experience for me as this was the first time I have had the opportunity to walk someone all the way through the Gospel to the end point of accepting Christ. - Renee

My huddle had the opportunity to hear a coach’s testimony the day before the campers shared their own testimony, which was incredibly impactful. Hearing my testimony as well as a coach’s helped them feel like they can open up and be vulnerable because they saw it from us first. I saw the Lord work in their hearts this day, and we all grew closer and stronger because of it. - Cassie

When one of my girls explained that she lost a friend to overdosing, it helped the huddle understand that everyone deals with pain and loss which created a very open place for them to share their hearts. - Lily

How did you grow through your time as a huddle leader at Sports Camp?

Being a huddle leader showed me that I know more about the Gospel than I thought I did. It also showed me how much I want to teach and share with others. Ministry may be in my life goals now that I have been a huddle leader. - Adrianna

It just really helped me remember what it takes to be a leader, especially to a younger group of girls that look to you for most of the answers about the day. - Cynthia

I grew so much. I know they blessed me more than I blessed them. Hearing their questions allowed me to demonstrate my faith and grow stronger in it. - Tay

The Lord has been teaching me patience and He provided those opportunities for me to rely on Him and be patient. - Olivia

Is there anything else you want to share?

This was a great experience, and I will recommend it for anyone who is even slightly interested! -Jordan

My advice for any nervous campers or intimidated huddle leaders: Come to camp!!! The community is wonderful and so many people want to get to know you and love you! God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. - Lizzy

I am so grateful for such an incredible experience as a first time Huddle Leader and can’t wait for next year! Thank you! - Cassie

Camp was literally the best week ever! And I can’t wait to come back next year! - Lily

Thank You, Huddle Leaders!

Every coach, volunteer, and staff member who serves at sports camp is vitally important to the experience campers have, and we cannot overemphasize the impact of these huddle leaders who come to pour of themselves and while doing so are able to soak in God’s love and grow in valuable leadership skills. We are so grateful for everyone who gave a week of their summer to serve at camp, and we can’t wait to see what God will do in the hearts of every camper – and huddle leader!
