LEADership Camp is Legit

A message from LEADership Camp Director, Brent Voight:

This year's camp was incredible. Hard to beat last year's, but this year might have.

LEADership Camp Director is about 10% of my role with FCA. It is the best ministry I get to be a part of throughout the year.

I am blessed to work with incredible staff to make this camp what it is. We have Tanja as Registrar, Huddle Leader Coorindators in Amanda and Draper, program guys Jonny P and Erik, Competitions Coordinators Ben & Adam, good friend and assistant Director Russ, "The Other FCABrent" who does so much that most of us don't realize, Emily who organizes all of our worship and Scott from UNW who makes all the logistics so simple.

This is the purest example of a team effort. I'm blessed. Thank you all.

Camp wouldn't be camp without these 24 huddle leaders. Nearly all of them in college. Some of them with an FCA background, others not. Some having come to this very camp as a camper, but most not. These are the ones most in need of your prayers during camp. They are on the frontlines, 24x7 for five days. Their role is so demanding, and they do it like champions. We don't pay them anything (though I'd love for that to be different). One leader says every year, "I'd pay to come here to serve at this camp."

I shared with the huddle leaders during training, history is littered with organizations, missions, companies who began with a clear and determined focus on Jesus, but over time faded away to looking nothing like their founders intended. Not so with FCA. We staff and volunteers are called to guard the Gospel. It's not enough to preach, teach, train and disciple if we have a false or skewed gospel, so we guard it with all we have. We chose this year to make Gospel Clarity one of our key targets. We had Pastor Sam from Eau Claire come in and open the camp with a message explaining what the Gospel is and what a Gospel-centered culture is. I love these notes that one of our campers took during Sam's talk:

Camp is filled with classroom time, training up these leaders in FCA's way of campus discipleship, but also methods and whys and hows for our leaders' own personal walk with Jesus.

We also let the campers burn off a ton of energy with our daily round of Competitions. This year featured some plays in our goofy games that warranted Sports Center Top 10 consideration.

So far, everyone that has turned in an evaluation says their huddle is the best part of camp. Our huddles spend most of the camp together, going through the teaching rotations, sitting together at chapel, eating meals together, but traditional huddle time is still the favorite, simply time to talk in depth about the things they are hearing and the way the Spirit is moving in and through them.

I love the tradition during our Competitions that after each game the competing huddles gather for a quick prayer. Such a powerful visual of the purpose and opportunity of sport.

We have powerful worship at this camp. Emily and her friends do such an amazing job. It's like a mini worship concert two times a day.

We were blessed to have six huddle coaches from MN and WI join us for Camp this year. Parker from Woodbury served as a huddle leader. Hannah from White Bear Lake and the four WI huddle coaches helped out in several capacities while also getting the benefit of listening in on the teaching sessions.

I had the opportunity to interview a few campers up front, helping them tell their story of how Christ as impacted their lives and how previous LEADership Camps have helped them lead their huddles. Trygve and Dawnyel, below, are joint student leaders of their huddle in Stratford, WI. Tinlee is an incredible young lady with a very difficult 14 years having been born deaf after suffering from bacterial meningitis. After a lifetime of challenges related to that to the recent passing of a dear friend, she still remains joyful and is a bright light to her peers. She even wrote a book! I read it during camp; it should be required reading for every parent of a teenage daughter.

The guy/girl breakout is usually a favorite of all the campers, but especially the females. Michelle came and led an incredible (I've heard) session filled with a lot of tears and a lot of vulnerability. Michelle is so gifted at helping young women see and believe their value. Late that night, after the girl breakout and after the long huddle that followed, my daughter Kylie--who served as a huddle leader--came to me holding back tears. I could tell she wasn't well and when I asked her about it she broke down because of the stories she was hearing from her girls. Her heart broke for them and all they have gone through in their lives, things no one should have to endure. So when we see pictures of strong girls like the one here, we should know there are likely many hurts and wounds we don't see. Please be praying for our young people!
