“You’ll See”: What God Is Doing through Esko FCA

Tanja Hansen • May 7, 2026

When Matt first stepped into his role with FCA, one of his priorities was simple - get to know the communities he was being called to serve. As he began building relationships and gathering support, he met with a local community leader who was well-connected and supportive of FCA. At the end of their conversation, she gave Matt a list of people connected to schools across the area who might be open to FCA ministry.

One of those names was Sarah Petite at Esko High School.

When Matt reached out, Sarah responded right away. He visited her near the end of the 2023/24 school year, and it didn’t take long to see her heart. She loved the Lord, cared deeply about students, and had a long-standing desire to see something like FCA exist at Esko.

“I had wanted something like this for years,” Sarah shared. “I knew there was a hunger for God, and if I could help fuel that fire for Jesus while encouraging strong character in sports, it was worth it. More than anything, I want these kids to know Him personally and become champions for the King of Kings.”

With that shared vision, they made a simple plan - stay connected through the summer and look toward launching a huddle in the fall.

That plan became reality in January 2025 when the first FCA huddle met. It was small and informal, just a few students gathered around tables in the commons area during lunch. They spent time in a short devotional, prayed together, and talked about what this could become moving forward. It may not have been impressive by most standards, but it was faithful.

Over the next couple of months, Matt stayed connected with Sarah, encouraging her and providing resources while she led. When he returned to visit in March, he asked her how many students had been coming.

Her response was simple. “You’ll see.”

As the huddle began, Matt sat near the front of the room. When he turned around, he was met with something he did not expect. The room was full! Students were even sitting on the floor because there were not enough chairs. In just two months, the group had grown from a handful of students to around forty gathering to study God’s Word together.

At the end of that meeting, Matt had the opportunity to close in prayer. As he finished, the room responded together with a loud “Amen.”

That growth has not slowed. What began as a twice-a-month gathering has become a twice-a-week rhythm, with students choosing to use their lunch period regularly to be there. In a school of roughly 375 students, more than 10% are now consistently involved in the huddle!

According to Sarah, the reason behind it is not complicated. Students are hungry for truth, for community, and for a place where they can grow in their relationship with Jesus. She has kept the structure simple and focused, using short, intentional time in God’s Word while also creating space for students to step forward and lead. They are praying in front of their peers, sharing their testimonies, and even presenting short, Scripture-based messages. In the process, they are not just attending a gathering, they are learning how to live out and communicate their faith.

What is happening at Esko is also a reflection of how God often works through His people together. The connection that led to Sarah came through multiple relationships, including a local church and a leader from Young Life. Each step required someone willing to make an introduction, to share a name, or to support the mission in a different way. Rather than competing, these ministries are working alongside each other with the same goal of reaching students with the Gospel.

As the huddle continues to grow, new needs are emerging. There is already talk of moving into a larger space to accommodate the number of students attending. Additional volunteers are stepping in to help lead, and there is a clear need for more FCA staff to support schools like Esko and the surrounding communities.

Through all of it, one thing remains clear. This is not something that was manufactured or forced. It began with a few conversations, a willing leader, and a small group of students. God has been the one building it, drawing students in, and raising up leaders from within.

And He is not finished yet.
