What Does a Leader Look like?

What Does a Leader Look like?

There’s a scene in the film Remember the Titans when the team is at training camp with Coach Boone and things are not going well as he tries his best to get his players to see each other through the lens of unity instead of segregation. If you’re not familiar with the movie, Gary and Julius are two of the main characters. Here’s a clip of their conversation after another grueling practice:

Did you catch that?

“Attitude reflects leadership."

It’s true. Motivation, action, direction, vision, attitude - you name it - will reflect the leadership. This is true no matter the context - school, church, government, or athletic team. People will catch the vision and motivation leadership demonstrates, which is why at Minnesota FCA one of our key pillars is equipping and empowering Christ-centered leaders.

It is why for the past 20+ years FCA has held a Leadership Camp for high school students who want to go back to their campuses and impact them for Christ. It is why FCA staff intentionally invest in coaches. It is why so many huddle coaches across the state pour into their student leaders. They know they are the ones who will have the most impact on their fellow teammates, students, and community.

What does a leader look like? You need look no further than the faces in this video.

May these growing characteristics in our leaders be catching in our communities and schools and in so doing, spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Secure Identity - Relatable - Trustworthy - Inspiring

Passionate - Authenticity - Wisdom - Valor

Integrity  - Dependable - Patient - Confident - Compassionate

Talent management needs to be seen as every leader’s responsibility and they need to be equipped with how to manage that talent. They need to know (or be shown) what that effort looks like in the context of their organization remembering that each organization is unique. Business leaders of all levels have a right to be worried, but in that concern, should be an endless optimism that we can conquer this challenge and that we can rise together and embrace a new future and the gig economy paradigm.
